Protective Behaviours.....
is an internationally acclaimed prevention education program which focuses on personal safety skills that adults can easily learn and then teach to children of all ages. Protective Behaviours, through targeted prevention strategies, actively works towards empowering children to make well-informed decisions about what is safe and what is unsafe, teaching them how to problem solve when they feel unsafe and how to access help when they need it.
In teaching these concepts and strategies Protective Behaviours aims to increase safety, prevent abuse and reduce violence in our communities. It is a practical program and is easy to understand. It offers a fun, interactive style of teaching and does not use scare tactics to get the safety messages across to the child. It works well with children (and adults) of all races, ages, abilities, culture and gender … it is for all people!

Protective Behaviours provides a framework that can easily be adapted to home, school and community environments. Children learn about the concepts of ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe’ and what to do when they feel unsafe. Some of the topics we cover include:
- Recognise and effectively express their feelings.
- Theme One of Protective Behaviours … ‘we all have the right to feel safe at all times.’
- Learning that ‘feeling safe’ or ‘feeling unsafe’ is an internal process – children learn how to focus on the signals within their bodies.
- The difference between safe and unsafe secrets and what to do when asked to keep an unsafe secret.
- Learning that they can talk with someone if they feel unsafe (Theme Two of Protective Behaviours … ‘We can talk with someone about anything, no matter what it is’.
- Developing a personal ‘safety network’ of trusted adults whom they can talk with.
- Learning about persistence - to persist in asking for help when they feel unsafe.
- Learning that every person is the boss of his/her own body and the importance of using correct terminology for all public and private parts of the body.
- The difference between safe and unsafe touching.
- Learning that they have a right to protect their personal space and how to respect the personal space of others.
